Day 8: Calligraphy, Cooking, and Sports! 8

Today was another red-letter day for the Red Wing and Ikata exchange students. There is so much to learn that I hope that they are taking notes :) Plenty of pictures today so I will let them do the talking.

Our instructor, Ms. Utsunomiya,
explaining us the basics of Japanese brush writing.

Getting used to holding a brush by writing our names.

All students tried their hand,
some have a bit more experience than others.

Leslie's calligraphy was top-notch!
Look how well Ayaka holds her brush.
Everyone is really concentrating.

Kanoko focusing on getting it just right.

After practicing a few times, we played a relay-race game.
Each person would write one stroke in the character and the team to finished first won.

Some teams took their time to get it just right.

Mrs. Utsunomia then made the students experiment with different stroke styles.

Working as a team to make sure the character balances well.

Local English teacher Susanna also joined in! Thanks!

Mrs. Utsunomiya was really pleased with how things went.
"Remember it is ok if you make a mistake, all that matters is that it balances well in the end."

Then she told us to try writing with our weak hand.

The characters looked different than the examples
but Mrs. Utsunomiya was really happy with them.
"Make sure you always use a different hand to help keep the flow natural"

Three relay teams and healthy competition.

It was a fun morning drawing the Japanese character for "dream".
"You can have big dreams or little dreams" said Mrs. Utsunomia.

Last, we made one big poster to use during the town's culture festival.
Mao did the honors and drew the large character in the middle.

Of course we want to try to mix with people from the other country,
sometimes we just can not help but want to speak in our native language.

All together for the final shot! Great work everyone!

Cooking time in Ikata.
Oh no Helen what's wrong? "The onions made me cry!"
And so the their team name, The Crying Mikans" was born.

Every student did their part in cooking for the team.
This year's menu: Japanese Curry and Rice.

Joking around with large cooking chopsticks.

Susanna making faces? Cooking can't be all work now, can it?

Foster gives me the all-good as the team splits up the curry roux.

Good friends Honoka and Ayaka pose but wait....who is that in the background?

Oh my! Jesse, their English teacher, has really done it this time.

Hirokazu masters stirring the curry.

Is Hirokazu the only one working? How did this happen? : )

Plating up the food!

All together now! Everyone was so hungry but waited patiently until the last person sat down.

An exhausted camera gets some respite while her owner
has a bit of Japanese curry for lunch.

Ready to chow down. We pause for a moment to say
"Itadakimas!  Thank you for the meal!"

This is what happens when you give a group of teenagers
a whiteboard and a few dry-erase markers.

After lunch we had about an hour to relax before heading to the gym.
The Ikata students learned how to play lightning.

Honoka was very good.

Students who got knocked out sat to the side and cheered.

After basketball, we had a ping-pong tournament. I was kept really busy with the set up and coordinating the games so I wasn't able to take any pictures. Did anyone get any good ones? If so, I would love to post them here.

Last, we all got together and played a few games of volleyball. Here's a panorama of the arena.

Even the Red Wing chaperone was getting in on the action.

We played six players in rotation, with players from both countries splitting into two teams.

Despite it being his last day in Japan, the Ikata English teacher
came out to help with setting up, playing, and interpreting.
Thank you so much, Jesse!
