Day 4: Miyajima and Onward to Ikata 4日目：宮島、そして伊方へ

　After a full day yesterday we all woke up (some of us later than others) at Hotel Makoto to a bright new morning waiting for us on the island of Miyajima, about an hour's train ride south west of central Hiroshima. Breakfast was Japanese-style complete with some traditionally ceremonial red sea bream. (yum! (?)) Our brave travelers gave it their best shot. ごちそうさまでした！(gochiso sama deshita/ thank you for the meal) they all said, and we got up and headed into town. Today's itinerary: Trying on some kimonos, exploring Itsukushima Shrine (one of Japan's big-three scenic spots), some shopping, and --if we are lucky--getting up close and personal with some er....locals. (Miyajima's famous deer population)

  よく眠て、昨日の忙しい一日の疲れを乗り切ったレッドウィング学生派遣生は、みんなで朝食を食べました。朝食は超和食で、派遣生は頑張って挑戦して食べました。「ごちそうさま」と言って、日本三景の一つの宮島を見学しに出かけました。今日の宮島での日程は「着物体験」と「厳島神社」と「買い物」です。そして運が良ければ地元の...人（鹿？）と交流をするかもしれません。

お豆腐もありました。

In town we first stopped at Tachibana to try on Kimonos.
一番最初訪ねたのはしゃもじ工房、着物体験スポット。

Leslie was the first to try on the kimono.
Can you believe it weighs 15 pounds?
レスリーは一番目でした。
着物の重さは８キロだとみんな驚きました。

 "Hold the fan with your left hand. Squat down just a little...Perfect!"
「はい、扇子は左手に、もう少しさげて、そうそうそう！」とオーナーさん。
ヘレンはにこにこ。

Marissa too! 　マリッサも！

Of course Foster was very excited to try on one too.
フォスターはとにかく嬉しいです。

Miyajima Rice Paddles.
宮島のしゃもじ 

Miyajima is famous not only for their deer, but also for their  rice paddles. Why?
Miyajima is home to the biggest rice paddle (shamoji) in all of Japan. Why?
It comes from the saying "Meshi wo Toru" "Take in the spoils" It has a double meaning because "Meshi" also means "rice" Therefore, taking the rice =  being not for want. Thus the giant shamoji acts as a prayer for Miyajima:  "May Miyajima never be for want"  If you bring a rice paddle back from Miyajima, then it becomes a prayer for your family:　"May my family never be for want."

宮島は鹿だけではなくて、しゃもじにも有名だと言われています。それはなぜか？実は宮島は日本一大きいなしゃもじがあるからです。それはなぜかというと、「メシをとった」と言うと「勝った」という意味にもなるから、しゃもじは幸運なものです。

And then we found a deer.
宮島の鹿を見つけました。
（そんなに見つかりにくくなかったですけど）

As you can see, the shrine is built up from the ground on stilts.
This is because ocean water comes up during high-tide.
厳島神社から撮ったもう一つの立場。
見れば解るように、厳島神社は支柱に建てられています。
それはなぜかと言うと、満潮の時に潮はそこまで上がってくるからです。

We all read our fortunes. Shelley easily got the most favorable of all of us.
シェリー引率者は一番いいのにあたりました。

We tried to get our picture in front of this gate at night...but it was too dark.
So, we tried again today! ^^
昨日の夜この同じところに写真を撮影してみましたが、
やはり暗くて上手く撮れませんでしたので、今日もう一回！

So colorful!　けっこうカラフルですね。

Others passed the 3-hour ride playing cards.
他の子供達はトランプを遊んで、楽しく３時間を過ごしました。

Still others wrote in their diary.
さらに他の子達は日記にその日の出来事を書いていました。
えらいね！^^ ホームステイの最後まで、がんばって！

We had a welcome party from Ikata waiting for us at the port!

松山港で出迎えに来た伊方町国際交流協会のメンバーです！

An early dinner at "Rose House", a buffet style place.
The cheese cake was very good. Marissa mastered chopsticks.
松山のローズハウスで夕食をちょっと早めに食べました。
チーズケーキは美味しかったです。
マリッサは正しいお橋の使い方を学びました。

Having a few laughs.　そして冗談を言ったり笑ったりしました。

It was decided that this was the best drink:
Calpis/Melon Soda Mix Drink.
みんなはこの飲料が好評でした。

Finally arriving in Ikata! This scene was awaiting us.

Students and families all gathered to meet eachother for the first time.
伊方町のホストファミリーの皆さんが伊方町公民館で集まって、
レッドウィング派遣生を出迎えに来てくれました。
