Your suggestions, please! :)

Some of our Ikata students would like to know:

"What should we know before going to America? What should we do to prepare?"

Of course, they know all about getting their passports in order and completing the U.S. ESTA form online. But so far, they don't know what they don't know yet. What advice would you give them-- to lessen culture shock? --to enable them to have more fun? --to make it easier to talk with people (i.e., through a simple catchphrase or new slang? --to prepare them for new sights, sounds, or foods? Or anything else!

Leave your answers in the combox, and I will translate them in another post.

We're all looking forward to reading your advice!

  1. Just keep an open mind about everything.

Everything is large and spread out here. Huge fields of corn, soybeans, and grain. Big houses and big yards. The people in Red Wing are relaxed and friendly. They will be happy to talk to you even though your English is not perfect. Don't worry, relax, have fun, and try everything. You won't be disappointed.

  3. Step outside your comfort zone and try new things. If you try to be more outgoing you will have more fun.

  4. Expect to eat a lot of red meat and little fish.
People won't mind if your english is bad and you'll get a smile if you say please and thank you.

I am helping Lauren get ready to visit you. You will notice various architecture of buildings in each town but most were built in 1880's to 1990's. There are many choices for everything: foods, soda, clothes, shopping, destinations to visit and ways to spend time. Our families are like yours big and small. There are less family farms then there used to be and many people drive instead of biking or walking. We need to exercise to stay healthy since we drive to work, school or events in the spread out city. The Mississippi river runs along the city and widens to a lake by my house. You will be able to see the Mississippi river from your plane as you get closer to land. Enjoy your excitement as you get ready to meet us. I am excited to meet you.
