Fort Snelling

When we went to Fort Snelling, some of the kids were a little sketchy on what a "fort" actually means. Luckily, this historic site is devoted to explaining that in a hands-on way, so you can walk into the various buildings and see for yourself what they contain. Even better, there are actors and actresses playing the parts of soldiers and soldiers' wives, so you can see anything from an old-fashioned doctor explaining his medicines, to soldiers firing a cannon salute outside. By the time we left Fort Snelling, we had all learned something new.

zipping through the Sculpture Garden

It took us a bit longer than projected to walk from the Black Forest Inn to the Sculpture Garden, so the kids were anxious to get on the air-conditioned bus! Our driver, Ken, was nice enough to take us to a DQ first!

Black Forest Inn

We gave the staff a bit of a startle on that sunny, quiet, Tuesday afternoon when 11 of us (our group and my brother, Isaac) filed into the Black Forest Inn. They worried for a moment that we were part of a much larger group set to appear the following day. Fears allayed, we were all able to sit around the same table and enjoy some top-notch spaetzel and other German-American food in a gorgeous restaurant.

Visiting the MIA

Somehow, one gets the feeling that all this art was a bit overwhelming for the kids.

Hanging out with JSA

One of the things I had been looking forward to most while we visited the Twin Cities was meeting with members of the U of M's Japan Student Association. By meeting them and talking with them, our Ikata kids would become aware of the possibility and reality of study abroad, as well as how Japanese culture is being spread at the U of M, and what long-term life in the US is like for Japanese and other international students.

It was an amazing opportunity, and we are all grateful to Yuusuke, the president of JSA, and everyone else who came out to meet us that night.

Mr. Asano started us off with some guidelines for a roundtable discussion.

The Ikata kids asked about everything from safety and getting used to American money to where our JSA friends plan to work after graduation. In turn, they were asked about their favorite subjects in school and what they want to be when they grow up.

We took a group photo. (Actually, earlier on this same day we had experienced a theft, so the kids were reluctant to leave their cameras in order to take this picture. Thankfully, nothing happened while our JSA friends were with us.)

The U of M campus was so big and well kept! We walked across it on our way to dinner. I wondered if any of the kids might be envisioning themselves there.

The Loring Pasta Bar wasn't able to seat us all inside (we'd been told earlier that we couldn't make a reservation, and there were 17 of us with our JSA friends), but we did fit quite comfortably at the tables outside. The pasta was excellent!

TC Metro

They definitely weren't our favorite form of transportation, but they were an experience.

Home again, home again...

Well, now we're all home, and we didn't leave anybody behind, either! It's been an adventure-packed week since we left Red Wing, and we couldn't have done it without the support of the fine folks at KNT and the IIEA.

I'll be uploading my photos (slowly) on Facebook in the coming week. Take a look!

The Ikata kids still have to write a trip report, and we'll have a final wrapping-up meeting in September, but this year's program is over. It's hard to believe.

the last leg 最後のバス

We made our domestic flight in good time and are now on the Ikata town bus on our way back home!

River City Days & Farewell Party

Today was a very hot day. (I wondered if one of us had accidentally brought some of Ikata's heat and humidity over in our luggage.) We dressed in yukata, jimbei, and happi with our Red Wing friends and walked or rode in the parade. It was tiring, but looking at all the people who had come out to watch, we were very glad to be a part of it.

夕方に、ある教会のホールでお別れ会をしました。幸いなことに、冷房がよく効きました。^^;
We were lucky enough to have our farewell party in an air-conditioned church hall.

We were delighted to see Red Wing's mayor, the honorable John Howe, and take a picture with him.

Afterwards, we received a lovely gift-- the group photo we took yesterday on nice paper with a sturdy frame. We all got busy getting signatures and messages from our families, friends, classmates, and chaperons.
Tomorrow morning, of course, we in the Ikata group will leave. We all wish we could be here longer, but as it is, we are very grateful for the precious time we've been able to spend with our new families and friends in Red Wing. Thank you all so very much!

Summer BBQ Party

Summer evenings in Minnesota are generally bright until about 8:30. This evening, we all went to a barbecue party at the Lawrences' house. Actually, there had been some talk of a bonfire, but we ended up leaving to go to another place at 7:30, so it was just a regular party. Although I should add, to my mind it was a lovely party with all the laid-back charm Minnesotans excel at providing.

Group picture.

Root beer floats!! Not such a big hit with the Ikata girls, although they loved the ice cream.

At 7:30, we went to see Red Wing's baseball team, the Aces. Before the game began, the Ikata student delegation and chaperons went down on the field and we introduced ourselves. After that, we stood for America's national anthem and then each one of us received baseballs signed by the Aces! It was really exciting!

This morning's activities

This morning we were going to play soccer and do arts and crafts with Dawn at the junior high school, but since it was raining we went to the Y instead, where we were able to do whatever we liked. There was basketball, soccer, foosball, the art project, and....... table tennis! (M and Y were especially happy that they were finally able to play table tennis. Tao from the Sister Cities Commission was nice enough to come and play with them, too.)
Tonight there's a bonfire, so I hope it doesn't rain again!

(1)Day of Tours (pt. 1)

First, we went to Red Wing Pottery and watched the potter at work.

We went to Hobgoblin Music and saw some harps-in-progress. We also heard folk music from hammer dulcimers and mountain dulcimers, and the kids got to try hitting the hammer dulcimer, too.

Later on, we went to Sheldon Theater and got an amazing "up and over" tour that reminded me (at least) of Phantom of the Opera. We saw a brick on the back wall with Billy Burke's signature-- before she played Glinda on The Wizard of Oz, she came and danced at the Sheldon!
