Hiking and a Welcome Party

We checked out many different works of art by local artists on display at
Red Wing Depot (station)a station used in the past and even to this day.

The picture is a bit blurry but they were checking out some locally-designed jewelry.

Naoyuki and Takumi's host mother showed us around.

After leaving the Depot, we headed over to the Red Wing Shoes Store.
On the way, we ran into a girl watering the Red Wing Flower Baskets.
She told us that they water the baskets once every two days and that each time it takes
up to 6 hours to water them all. The town accept applicants for the job
beginning every February but it's not an easy job to get because so many people apply.

After the shoes store we went to a confectionary store next door.
There there was a chocolate and caramel covered cashew candy.
Naoyuki said "Man I really love cashews" and soon the
store owner had a whole bunch of samples for us to try!

"This place is great!" Said Mr. Adachi.

Takumi was feeling like ice cream and he ordered and paid for it all by himself.
He got mango flavor, by the way.

What a lovely dollhouse-looking home of one of the host families.

In their rooms relaxing and passing the time.

For lunch it was turkey and ham sandwiches.
For dessert it was rhubarb pie, Mrs. Rauterkus' treat.

This was Naoyuki's sandwich. Multigrain bread and a heap of lettuce and turkey,
pretty healthy.

Barn Bluff
After lunch, we headed over to Barn Bluff.
We hiked for about 2 hours and got good and tired out.

One of the grandsons of the host families decided to join us on the walk.

Barn Bluff
Nothing beats the view of Red Wing from the top of Barn Bluff.
You really get an idea of the center of Red Wing, the Mississippi River, and
the geography of Minnesota.

At the top, you can look across the river to the state of Wisconsin.
You can even see the Red Wing power plants from here.

Barn Bluf
After hiking to the far western point, we headed off to the western point of Barn Bluff.

At the western point, we stopped to enjoy the view.
You can see the Mississippi River, Lake Pepin, and Highway 61.

And then we headed back.

We planted a ceremonial tree of friendship in the afternoon.
The boys threw the first bit of soil in.

Last but not least, watering the tree.

We headed over to the welcome party after the tree planting.
You can really tell that the Ikata students are getting to know each other
more and more every day.

First, the Ikata exchange students received gifts from the City of Red Wing
Sister Cities Commission.

After, as a representative of the City, Red Wing Sister Cities Commission
Ikata coordinator Ryan bestowed a series of photographs by a local photographer to

That night the Ikata exchange students all hung out and played games to gather.

On the other hand, the chaperones joined the Mayor and his wife
as well as one of the host families for a drink,
talking extensively about the exchange program this year and
reminiscing about those of the past.
