Day 2: シカゴ市内 In Chicago

今日はシカゴ市内でウィリスタワー、ネイビーピアー、シカゴ美術館、チャイナタウンなどいろいろ観光してきました。昼からは時差ぼけが強かったですが、最後までみんな元気に頑張って、笑顔で終わらせました。写真は下に掲載します。今日は６０枚以上ありますので、ゆっくりみて楽しんでください。たくさんのコメント、子供達への励ましの言葉を待っています！よろしくお願いします。

朝食はとてもアメリカンで、ベーコンにパンケーキにスクランブルエッグなど
自由にとって食べました。モモかさんは多くのアメリカ人が
好きなビスケット・アンド・グレイビーを食べてみて
「美味しい」と言っていました。ナオユキさんはベーコンのお変わりまでいっぱい食べました。
みんなよく食べて、アメリカでの一日目をとても元気で出迎えました。
Breakfast was very American with bacon and pancakes and scrambled eggs
all buffet style. Momoka tried the biscuits and gravy and said they were "pretty good!" and
Naoyuki went back for seconds of bacon. All in all the kids ate really well
and greeted their first full day in the USA full of energy.

最初に行ったのはホテルからちょっと離れているウィリスタワーでした。
タワーに入るとツアーコースの価格表というこの看板がありました。
私たちはスカイデック（展望台）コースにして、上がってみました。
The first place we stopped at was Willis Tower just a few blocks down
from our hotel. Once inside, we were met with this display with prices for many attractions.
We got tickets to the Skydeck, and headed on up.

上がる前、ウィリスタワーの歴史についての動画を見ました。
字幕なし英語で流れましたが、わかりやすい説明で派遣生は大体わかったでしょう。
Before heading up, we watched a video about the history of the tower.
There weren't any subtitles and the video was all in English,
but it was all laid out in a pretty easy to understand way so I think most of the kids
got a pretty good idea of what was being said.

スカイデックからの眺めをゆっくり楽しみながら、写真をたくさん撮りました。
The students were sure to take a bunch of pictures as they enjoyed their time on the Skydeck.

ホノカさんとスズカさんは双眼鏡を使ってシカゴ市街地を見てみました。
Honoka and Suzuka tried using the binoculars to get a better view of the cityscape of Chicago.

スカイデックにLedgeという壁も天井も最強グラスパネルでからできている場所があり、
シカゴの魅力を一望して楽しめます。
しかも、床も透明なグラスですので、真下を見ると鳥のように飛んでいると感じます。
In the Skydeck of the Willis Tower there is a place called The Ledge where the walls and
ceiling are made of incredibly strong glass panels and you can get a great view of the entire city.
Best of all, because the floor is also made of clear glass you almost feel like a bird
flying high above the city.

ウィリスタワーのギフトショップで面白いお土産を発見！
ホットドッグとピザというシカゴ地の有名なBグルメの形にした帽子です
使わないと思って買いませんでしたが、写真を撮ってお送りします。
We found some interesting souvenirs in the Willis Tower gift shop.
Hats made into the shapes of Chicago's famous food, hotdogs and pizzas.
We didn't buy them because we thought we wouldn't use them ever again,
but we were sure to get a picture.

その後、ウィリスタワーを出て、バスに戻りました。そこで、レッドウィング市の
フラワーバスケットみたいなものがありました。
After that, we headed out of the Tower and back to the bus.
There, there was something very similar to the flower baskets of Red Wing.

派遣生はビルの外側の鉄階段に昇のが楽しそうと言っていましたので、
写真を撮って載せます。
This is a picture of one of the many steel staircases that we saw on the outside of many
of the buildings in Chicago. All the students all said they looked like they would be fun to use.

シカゴでは野外に芸術作品（像）がたくさん展示されています。
そのなか、ピカソがデザインした一つもありました。
遠くから見ると顔のような形がわかりますが、
多くのシカゴの子供達にとっては像より滑り台として
考えられているそうです。それを聞いた派遣生は
「そうなの？じゃあ、滑ってみてもいいですか？」
「どうぞ」とガイドさんは言うと、みんなやってみました。
There are many works of art (sculptures) on display outside throughout Chicago.
Among them is this one that was designed by Picasso.
From far away you can tell it is a face, but to the kids of Chicago
it's a slide! When the Ikata kids heard that they said,
"Really? Is it ok if we slide on it then?"
"Go right ahead" said our guide, and the rest is history.

「思ったより滑れた」と笑顔でナオユキさんは言いました。
"I slid better than I expected" Naoyuki said with a smile. 

ピカソの作品を滑り台にして遊んだという経験ってなかなか無いですよね。
ぜひ伊方の友達に語ってください。
Not every day you get to slide down a sculpture designed by Picasso, huh?
Be sure to tell all your friends once you get back to Ikata.

ピカソの滑り台の後は、ネイビーピアーに行って、
子供達も引率者もこの乗り物に乗ってみました。
「最初は怖かった！」とモモカは言いました。
After the Picasso slide, we headed to Navy Pier and the kids (and even the chaperones!)
rode on this ride.
"It was scary at first!" Said Momoka.

あっという間のネイビーピアー、
次の場所に行く前に玄関の前で写真を撮ってもらいました。
この写真でわかりにくいですが、グレイ色の壁にNavy Pierという文字があります。
We took one group photo as we headed out of Navy Pier.
You can't really tell by the picture, but the words "Navy Pier"
are spelled out on the grey wall behind us. 

曇っていましたが、シカゴのスカイラインがよく見えるし
みんないい顔しているので、とても奇麗に撮れたと思います。
It was overcast but I think we were able to get a great shot of everyone
with the Chicago skyline in the background.

２階建てのバスが目の前に通ったら、バスに乗っている人達に手を振ってみまた。
振り返すとみんな笑って写真を撮りました。
A double-decker bus passed in front of us and the kids decided to wave to the people on top.
When they waved back everyone laughed and smiled and reached in their pockets for their cameras.

「みず、みず！のどが乾いた」と派遣生が言ったら、私はコンビニが近くに無いですし、
自動販売機もないので、しかも誰も水を持って来なかったので、
どうしようと思った途端に
「お水いかが？」とバスの運転手さんが言いました。
クーラボックスいっぱいお水を持って来て用意してくれました。
すごいタイミングが良かったねと思いました。
At that time, several of the students were saying that they were getting thirsty.
There were no convenience stores near by and no vending machines,
moreover no one had brought any water with them so I wasn't sure what to do.
But just at that moment the bus driver turns to everyone and says "Anyone need water?"
He had brought a whole cooler filled with bottles of water for us!
Talk about good timing, I thought.

お昼は中華料理でした。
For lunch, Chinese cuisine in Chicago's China district.

アメリカの昼の時間は日本の夜中ですので、あまり食欲がなかったですが、
頑張ってたくさん食べてくれました。やさいも！
「みどりがほしかった」とスズカさん。
Lunch time in the USA is the middle of the night in Japan so no one had that much of an appetite.
Still, they ate their fill. Even their vegetables!
"I wanted something green" Said Suzuka.

レストランは人で結構込んでいました。
The restaurant was pretty full of people.

昼を食べてからシカゴ美術館に行きました。
After lunch, we headed to the Art Institute of Chicago.

シカゴ美術館の正面玄関の前で募金活動で
バイオリンを弾いていたふたりがいました。
There were two violinists playing in front of the Institute
raising money for a charity.

シカゴ美術館で最初に見たのはミニアチュアルームでした。
The first things we saw in the Institute were the Miniature Rooms.

和室もありました。
There was even a Japanese-style room.

この写真もミニアチュアルームの写真です。
近くにに撮るとわずか手のひらぐらいのサイズだとわかりません。
This picture is also of one of the miniature rooms.
When you take a picture up close, you can't tell that it's only about the
size of the palm of your hand.

ミニアチュアルームの後は、印象派の展示会へ移動しました。
After the miniature rooms, we moved on the the Impressionists displays.

日本語が話せるアメリカ人に出会うと、すぐ友達になりました。
We met an American who could speak Japanese and quickly became friends.

美術館の後は、美術館の隣のミレニアム公園に行って散歩しました。
沢山のお花や植物や野外芸術もあって、シカゴの人たちもたくさんいました。
ウェディングドレスを来ていた女性達が女の子はとても興味がありました。
ライブもあり、噴水で遊んでいる子供達もいて、とてもにぎやかな雰囲気でしたが
やはり時差でみんな疲れている顔をしていました。
After the Art Institute, we headed over to Millennium Park next door and walked around.
There were so many flowers and interesting plants, and the park was
filled with people. There were several ladies wearing wedding dresses that the girls were
especially interested in. There was also live music and kids playing in the water fountains.
All in all just a very lively atmosphere and great time...but I could tell jet lag was really starting to settle in.

そして今日の夕食はやっぱりシカゴスタイル！
サラダにdeep dish(厚い)シカゴピザでした。
一つのスライスだけでお腹がいっぱいになるというシカゴピザはいかが？
「おいしい！けど、チーズが多いよね」
For dinner? Nothing less than Chicago-style!
Salad and deep dish pizza! How is that pizza?
"Great! But there sure is a lot of cheese isn't there?"
