ホストファミリーのお土産を悩む方へ

Ｑ：アメリカのホストファミリーに、一体どんなお土産をあげましょうか？

Ａ：確かに、自分の国に慣れすぎると、面白いものが見逃しやすいですね。そこで、この問題を新しい目で見るためにできることは少なくとも３つぐらいあります。

①宇宙人が日本に到着したことを想像してみましょう。友だちであることを示すために、日本の素敵なところを見せるために、何をあげるでしょう？想像してみてください。写真集や、古い着物でできたバッグや、伝統的な色の甚平などはいかがでしょうか。あるいは、珍しいものとして、料理用のお箸や、一人一人のお箸も素晴らしいと思います。（アメリカでは、中華料理屋などで割り箸がほとんどなのです。）

②ホストファミリーの一覧を参考にして、一人一人のことを考えてみてください。兄弟姉妹は１０代でしたら、日本の１０代の人が好きな物をあげてはいかがですか？例えば、雑誌、お菓子、メモ帳など。また、ブックオフから日本の音楽ＣＤでも大人気かもしれませんよ。

③さっきの宇宙人に誘われて、あなたは今から５年間、宇宙飛行機に住むことになったと想像してみてください。地元を思い出すために、小さい荷物に何を入れて行きますか？

Temperature matters

Summers in Japan are hot, hot, hot.
More to the point, they're humid like you've rarely experienced.

After a grueling day in the heat, you might be tempted to blast the A/C in your room or ride in the coldest train car.

I'm here to warn you: don't do it!

While a brief blast of cold air is refreshing, you shouldn't shock your body by subjecting it to extreme temperatures. It's a sure way to catch a cold, and I'm sure you'll agree that you don't want to spend your homestay  sneezing and sniffling.

Okay, you might say, I'll keep the A/C off or to a minimum in my room at night, but what about public transportation? Trains, planes, and buses are all kept nice and icy during the summer.

I would suggest packing a light cardigan or a scarf to use in frigid indoor conditions.

Here are a few more points of Japanese etiquette to keep in mind as you prepare for your trip.


Do
+keep your baggage out of the way as much as possible on trains and buses.
+let taxi drivers open and close the doors for you.


Do Not
-talk loudly or use cellphones on public transportation.

-stand on the wrong side of the escalator.*



*In Tokyo (and Eastern Japan), people stand on the left, while in Osaka (and Western Japan), people tend to stand on the right. Just keep an eye out for what other people are doing, and you should be fine.

似ているのに～! ★ Food Lookalikes!

日本ではあんドーナツが普通ですが、アメリカに行くと同じような外見でも、中にはイチゴジャムなどが入っています！これはジェリードーナツですよ。

In the US we love our jelly donuts, but when you come to Japan, be careful! The same sugar-coated fried dough is probably filled with a dense, sweet, red bean paste. These are called an donuts, where an is the sweet bean paste.

また、日本の抹茶アイスは美味しいですよね！アメリカでは薄い緑色のアイスを見ましたら、きっとミントの味でしょう。中に入っている粒はチョコチップです！ミントアイスはすうっとしていて美味しいですよ！

What about mint chocolate chip ice cream? You can't get it here in Japan, but you can enjoy matcha aisu, or green tea ice cream. It's amazing!

Some Japanese Etiquette

In Japan, there are some things you should be aware of when eating, especially regarding the use of chopsticks.

Do Not

-stick chopsticks into a dish of rice.
-pass anything with your chopsticks to someone else's.
-scrape chopsticks together.
-use your chopsticks to point to anything.
-leave food on your plate.


Do

+wipe your hands with the hand towel provided at restaurants.
+feel free to keep both hands or forearms on the table.
+pick up small dishes, such as rice bowls, to eat out of them without spilling food.
+eat fruit or sweets last.
+sip your water slowly; glasses tend to be small.

電子辞書は？ と悩む方へ

「アメリカに行ったら大変だなあ。私の英語には自信がないし、相手がべらべらって話しかけるだろうし、言いたいことが伝わらなかったらどうしよう！やっぱ、電子辞書を持って行かなくちゃ」と思っているあなたに！

まず私は言っておきます。電子辞書はすごく便利な道具です。それは間違いありません。でも、皆さんがアメリカに行く理由をもう一度思い出してみてください。

ホームステイでしょう？そうです。そして、ホームステイというのは、その国の家族に入り込んで、そこの環境に慣れるというのが大切ですね。

じゃあ、ホストファミリーと晩ご飯を食べている。

マザー：今日は暑かったわ！何してたの？

ブラザー：哲と、友達の家に行ってバスケやってた。そして川を見に散歩した。

マザー：へえ。哲、どうだった？

哲：えっと。えっと。ちょっと待って。

　　楽しかった。友達の家は大きくて、、、芝生は広かった。

ファザー：日本の芝生はどんな感じ？

　　あ、そうそう、芝生。日本ではほとんどの家は芝生がない。

こうやって、会話になりませんよね！ただ単に単語を調べると、読むそばから忘れるし、話していることを忘れるし、相手とコミュニケーションを取りたいということさえ忘れてしまいそうになります。機械は便利な道具ですが、人と人の間に入りすぎると逆に壁になってしまうのです。

なので、電子辞書を持って行かない方がいいと思います。

皆さんが持っているホームステイ英会話の本には、必要な表現が全部書いてあるはずですから、必要な時にそれを使ってください。（なんとなく、ボタンを押すことよりも、実際に本のページを触ってめくることの方が、情報ははるかに覚えやすいらしいですよ。）
