Fort Snelling とりでの見学

When we went to Fort Snelling, some of the kids were a little sketchy on what a "fort" actually means. Luckily, this historic site is devoted to explaining that in a hands-on way, so you can walk into the various buildings and see for yourself what they contain. Even better, there are actors and actresses playing the parts of soldiers and soldiers' wives, so you can see anything from an old-fashioned doctor explaining his medicines, to soldiers firing a cannon salute outside. By the time we left Fort Snelling, we had all learned something new.

フォート・スネリングというとりでに行って見学しました。「とりで」というものがよく分からないという派遣生もいましたが、この場所は歴史的な記念館になっていますので、自分の足でそれぞれの建物に入ったり、自分の目でその様子を見たりすることができます。さらに、昔の兵士や夫人などを演じる俳優たちがいますので、お医者さんの姿や使っていた薬から、大砲からの礼砲をその場で聞くことまで、色々な体験ができます。フォート・スネリングを出る時までには、全員にとって勉強になったものがあったんじゃないかと思います。

zipping through the Sculpture Garden 彫刻園をちらっと見た

It took us a bit longer than projected to walk from the Black Forest Inn to the Sculpture Garden, so the kids were anxious to get on the air-conditioned bus! Our driver, Ken, was nice enough to take us to a DQ first!

ブラック・フォレスト・インから彫刻園まで歩くには、思ったより時間がかかりましたので、涼しいバスに乗るのを楽しみにしていました。運転してくれたケンさんは、暑いのでとりあえずアイスを食べに行こうと、デアリ・クイーンというアイス店まで親切に案内してくれました。

Black Forest Inn ドイツ料理☆

We gave the staff a bit of a startle on that sunny, quiet, Tuesday afternoon when 11 of us (our group and my brother, Isaac) filed into the Black Forest Inn. They worried for a moment that we were part of a much larger group set to appear the following day. Fears allayed, we were all able to sit around the same table and enjoy some top-notch spaetzel and other German-American food in a gorgeous restaurant.

静かな火曜日でした。ブラック・フォッレスト・インというドイツ料理屋には、11人（派遣団と私の弟）がやって来て、スタッフを一時驚かせました。翌日に予定していた、30人の団体が来ているかという不安を感じたそうですが、そうでないことが分かりましたら、みんな安心しました。今度は私たちが1つのテーブルを囲むことができました。とてもきれいな店でスペーツェルという面類や、ほかの美味しいドイツ料理を満喫することもできました。

Visiting the MIA ミネアポリス美術館

Somehow, one gets the feeling that all this art was a bit overwhelming for the kids.

Hanging out with JSA 日本学生会のメンバーに会った日

One of the things I had been looking forward to most while we visited the Twin Cities was meeting with members of the U of M's Japan Student Association. By meeting them and talking with them, our Ikata kids would become aware of the possibility and reality of study abroad, as well as how Japanese culture is being spread at the U of M, and what long-term life in the US is like for Japanese and other international students.

It was an amazing opportunity, and we are all grateful to Yuusuke, the president of JSA, and everyone else who came out to meet us that night.

観光期間の中で私が一番楽しみにしていたのは、ミネソタ大学の日本学生会（JSA）のメンバーに会えることでした。その出会いや話し合いを通して、派遣生たちは色々な大切なことに気付くだろうと思ったからです。例えば、留学の可能性と現実や、ミネソタ大学で日本文化がどういう風に広がっているとか、そして、日本人学生やほかの国際学生がアメリカに長い滞在をする経験について、たくさん学べるチャンスでした。

思った通り、とても有意義な時でした。JSAのタケノクチ会長さんを初め、話しに来てくれた皆さんに大変お世話になりました。ありがとうございました。

Mr. Asano started us off with some guidelines for a roundtable discussion.

最初に浅野先生は前もって、話し合いの流れを説明しました。

The Ikata kids asked about everything from safety and getting used to American money to where our JSA friends plan to work after graduation. In turn, they were asked about their favorite subjects in school and what they want to be when they grow up.

派遣生はミネアポリスの治安やアメリカの現金に慣れることから、JSAの皆さんの将来の仕事まで、色々な質問をしました。JSAの方から、派遣生の好きな科目や将来の夢などを聞かれました。

We took a group photo. (Actually, earlier on this same day we had experienced a theft, so the kids were reluctant to leave their cameras in order to take this picture. Thankfully, nothing happened while our JSA friends were with us.)

記念写真も撮りました。（実は当日の昼に盗難に遭いましたので、写真を撮るためにカメラを置いておくのが少し怖かったですが、JSAの仲間たちと一緒にいた間は何も安全にいけました。）

The U of M campus was so big and well kept! We walked across it on our way to dinner. I wondered if any of the kids might be envisioning themselves there.

ミネソタ大学のキャンパスは広くてきれいでした。夕食をするレストランに行くのに、キャンパスの一部を散歩することになっていましたが、歩きながら思ったのは、派遣生の誰かが将来ここに入学するかな・・・？

The Loring Pasta Bar wasn't able to seat us all inside (we'd been told earlier that we couldn't make a reservation, and there were 17 of us with our JSA friends), but we did fit quite comfortably at the tables outside. The pasta was excellent!

ローリング・パスタ・バーでは予約ができないと言うことで、着いた時に全員が中に入れませんでした。全員というのは、私たち１０人とJSAの仲間７人で、やはり大人数でした。しかし、外のテーブルに囲んで楽に食べられました。パスタは美味しかったです！！

TC Metro ツインシティーズ市内バス

They definitely weren't our favorite form of transportation, but they were an experience.

このバスは、私たちあまり好きじゃなかったですけど、一つの体験として受け取ってみました。
